Aim to increase number of dementia friends during Dementia Awareness Week

Aim to increase number of dementia friends during Dementia Awareness Week

A target to recruit 1,000 new Dementia Friends who understand and can help those who have dementia feel supported and included in their communities, has been set by the Wiltshire Alzheimer Partnership Group.

The ambitious target has been set to mark the upcoming Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Awareness Week (15 – 21 May).

The Alzheimer’s Partnership Group is made up of Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire CCG, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Support and the group’s project team has so far created 1,956 Dementia Friends in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Council, with support from Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Support, is running a series of information and guidance stands with the aim of raising awareness about dementia as part of events going on during the week. These stands will be held at nine different locations throughout the county including County Hall in Trowbridge, Monkton Park in Chippenham, Springfield Community Campus in Corsham, Malmesbury Library, Royal Wootton Bassett Library, Marlborough Library, Devizes Library, Warminster Library and Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre in Salisbury. The stands will be supported by staff and volunteers from Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Support.

Staff and volunteers will be on hand to offer informal advice and information to anyone with concerns related to dementia. No appointments are needed and everyone is more than welcome to come and find out more about what help is available to people living with dementia in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Council corporate director Maggie Rae said: ‘We are committed to giving everyone the opportunity to become a Dementia Friend so they have that extra understanding of what it can be like to live with dementia.

“It is really important that we all have the knowledge and understanding to help everyone feel supported and included in their communities.”

Wiltshire Council cabinet member for adult care, Keith Humphries said: “We’re very pleased to support this awareness week and really think residents will benefit from an increased awareness and understanding of dementia.

“Many communities have already shown great commitment to becoming Dementia Friends and we’re sure this will continue with many more doing the same.”

Babs Harris, CEO of Alzheimer’s Support, said: “Dementia Friends is a brilliant way for people from all walks of life to find out a little bit more about dementia and the small things they can do to support people they come across who are affected, whether at home or at work. It is not about creating experts and it is not about befriending, but about helping everyone to understand more.”

Ted Wilson, Community and Joint Commissioning Director,  Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group added, “Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.  Having the understanding of what it is like to live with dementia and then turning that understanding into an action can really improve a patient’s quality of life.  Sign up now to become a Dementia Friend and help someone live well with dementia”
