Duke of Edinburgh awards going from strength to strength in Wiltshire

Volunteers are being asked to help young people meet the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards as centres in Wiltshire are going from strength to strength. The Award is open to young people aged between 14 and 24 to take up the challenge to push their limits while learning new skills and carrying out volunteering. The DofE awards are essentially fun adventures which present major challenges for young people. E.g. Caving and potholing, climbing or mountain biking. Millions in the UK have taken part, pushing their boundaries, gaining new skills and enhancing their CVs. The Amesbury centre now needs a voluntary administrator to support the operations and running of the Duke of Edinburgh Open Award Centre to help the administration of the DofE databases and provide support necessary to maintain the centre. The club meet on Wednesday evenings at the Amesbury Sports Centre from 7-9pm. More volunteers to help with the expedition section of the Duke of Edinburgh are also needed for the popular Marlborough Open Award centre. Volunteers with an interest in the outdoors and camping and able to give their time to supporting expeditions in the local area, Wales and other wild country areas are needed.  No formal outdoor qualifications need to be held and DofE training will be provided.  Marlborough meets fortnightly on the Thursday from 7-9pm at the Marlborough Development Centre, St Margaret’s Mead. Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh Awards provide young people with immense opportunity, while they learn valuable life lessons and give something back by volunteering. If you enjoy being part of a team and gain satisfaction from seeing others grow as individuals and learn new skills, I would urge you to volunteer and support this great initiative.” If you are interested or would like more information, please visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/DofEWiltshire or contact the office, details are listed below: DofE Manager: louise.fisher@wiltshire.gov.uk Tel: 01225 716740
