With the advent of spring and the summer months approaching, people are being reminded to renew their garden waste collection subscription by 16 June if they want to receive this service. Existing customers will be sent a unique reference number by email or post the first week of April. They can use this reference number to easily renew their garden waste collection subscription either online or by phone, so customers are asked to wait to receive their unique code before contacting the council to renew their subscription. People are advised to provide an email address when they renew to receive email information alerts about their waste collections and other council services. New customers can now sign up online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/gardenwaste or by phone by calling 0300 456 0103. Residents can sign up to receive a garden waste collection service at any time during the year, but those already receiving the service should make sure they renew by 16 June to avoid any interruption to their collections. The cost of the service is £44 per bin for the year – less than 85 pence per week. The council will not empty garden waste bins that do not have a valid sticker attached. Once someone has renewed their subscription they will be sent a new sticker for July 2017 to June 2018. There are no major changes to garden waste collection days for this period. From April 2016 to February 2017 almost 28,000 tonnes of garden waste was collected from the 81,123 households subscribed to the service. All garden waste collected is composted locally with people encouraged to put bark, grass cuttings, cut flowers, weeds, leaves, hedge clippings, twigs and small branches in the bins. Carlton Brand, corporate director at Wiltshire Council said: “As we move into the months when we produce the most garden waste, I’d like to remind our garden waste customers to make sure they have signed up for next year’s collection service in good time. “There was a good take up of the service last year and almost 28,000 tonnes of garden waste was collected and diverted from landfill and composted locally.” A full waste collection calendar is available at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/rubbish-collection-days.
