Thirteen students from South Wiltshire UTC teamed up with six students from Salisbury Sixth Form to take part in the recent Junior Field Gun Challenge 2017.
Hosted by the Royal Navy at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, the event saw the group of students demonstrate a fierce team spirit and iron determination.
The team of eleven boys and eight girls gelled quickly and soon were able to practice their individual moves in a coordinated and determined fashion which led them to be the only team to achieve a clean run in each of the three completion heats.
“The team chant “Fire in the belly, ice in the mind, eyes in the boat” certainly paid off. Well done to one and all,” said Bryan Dowdey, Key Stage 5 Engineering Tutor.
Student, Michelle Trigwell, who took part said: “Dragging a limber and field gun the weight of a small car is an experience that you can only truly understand when you are one of the lucky few known to be Field Gunners. Having to put every ounce of trust into your team and moving together like a machine. The drill requires precision, patience and a lot of practice. One wrong move when manoeuvring it and the full force of the field gun can have you out for the count.”
