Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre Family Fun Day

The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham throws open its doors this half term with a day of activities for all the family. The annual open day on Saturday, 22 October is a chance for visitors to meet the experts who work with the county’s historic records and take a look behind the scenes at the varied work of the centre. Joining the resident experts will be Time Team archaeologist Phil Harding, who will be demonstrating how Stone Age flint tools were made, and master blacksmith and swordsmith Hector Cole sharing his knowledge of weapons and tools through the ages. Children’s activities will include puppet making, the chance to explore a microscopic world of bugs and play detective using x-ray images to identify mystery objects. Helping to bring history alive on the day will be John Putley as a medieval barber surgeon while Peter Beaven will be talking about the famous Pelham Puppets. Stuart Wheeler, cabinet member for heritage and arts, said: “This is a great opportunity to discover just how much goes on at Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. There will be something for everyone, with activities and talks to suit all ages. The history centre is a wonderful facility full of interesting material and this open day is designed to showcase all of the excellent things it has to offer.” The packed programme also includes tours of the strong rooms and high tech conservation labs not normally open to the public. Visitors will be able to chat to the archivists and conservators who work behind the scenes. There will also be opportunities to get hands on with the ancient art of paper marbling. Throughout the day there will be talks from the history centre’s resident experts in archives, archaeology and conservation. Refreshments will be available at the pop-up café.
